I love this quote out of Siedah's song "G.H.E.T.T..O" because it made me embrace everything about myself and everyone else around me..I know what the pressure feels like to want to fit in, and not stand out. A lot of us will claim that we always wanted to stand out. I disagree and yes I'll explain. Growing up, we said that we wanted to be unique, we didn't want to do what everyone else was doing and that we didn't care how other people felt about us...matter of fact, a lot of us still say those things. I refer to y'all as "us" and "we" because you are me and I am you. Despite our differences, we are similar in more ways than you can imagine. Ladies, I've been there, felt that, done that. Men, I birth you, you don't birth me. So next time you hear "boy you just like your daddy". My mans that is completely wrong, you're just like your mama. :) I digress though, back to the subject matter..
Why do we say we want to stand out when we are so concerned about fitting in. We are so worried about the physical picture and not the real mental image? I mean fr yall, why are we so concerned and obsessed with likes? Why we so pressed over instagram models? Why is it so much pressure to have social media friendship and relationship goals? Why are we so anxious to rock top designer, even though our pockets scream family dollar budget. Don't be ashamed about it. The same amount of money it took to make a designer shirt, is the same amount of money it took to make those family dollar pants. So what are yall really buying, is it the shirt you really like, or the name on it? Why does our popularity depend on the likes that we can get based on our outfit, our body type, our ability to entertain folks by portraying somebody that we truly are not when what we really want is somebody who genuinely love us without the filter and despite materialistic things. Why at the end of the day do we say we don't care about what others say when we are living a life that is NOT even sincerely ours.
